5 Police officers allegedly kidnap, extort N3m from man along Ikom-Calabar Highway

Five Nigeria Police officers are currently in detention at Zone 6 Police Station in Calabar, Cross River State, for allegedly kidnapping a man and fraudulently extorting N3 million from him.

Converseer learned that the incident happened along Ikom-Calabar highway in the state last week.

In a statement by SP Nelson A. Okpabi, Zonal Police Public Relations Officer for the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, on Monday, 1st July 2024, an investigation has begun for the five officers.

The statement said the AIG frowned at the unprofessional conduct of the said officers.

It said the outcome of of the investigation and disciplinary measures will be made public in due course, urging members of the public to go about the lawful activities and report erring Officers to the authorities.

The press statement with reference number: CZ:5300/ZPC.6/ZPRO/VOL.4/64, read:

“The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6 headquarters Calabar frowns at the unprofessional conduct of some Police Officers alleged to have abducted and fraudulently extorted N3,000,000 from an individual last week.

“The AIG has ordered a high-powered investigation into the matter to uncover the facts behind the allegations for an informed disciplinary measure to be taken.

“It would be recalled that Police Officers attached to the Zone, while on patrol along Ikom-Calabar highway were alleged to have indulged in corrupt practices and unprofessional conduct. The five Officers have been taken into custody and investigation commenced.

“The crime and criminality zero tolerant AIG vowed to ensure that appropriate disciplinary measures are taken against the erring Officers to serve as deterrence to others.

“The Zone which has recently been adjudged to have a very low crime rate, will not tolerate any criminality amongst Officers that are saddled with the responsibility and crime prevention and order maintenance.

“The outcome of the investigation and disciplinary measures including orderly trial and possible prosecution would be made to the public in due course.

“Members of the public are advised to go about the lawful activities and report erring Police Officers to supervising authorities without hesitation.”
