The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, has announced the fund’s plan to introduce a new intervention line focused on addressing security and power challenges in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Speaking at a recent two-day retreat in Lagos, organised by the National Assembly to address these issues, Masari emphasised the urgent need for enhanced funding to tackle the risks posed by insecurity and inadequate electricity, which are affecting academic performance and institutional stability.
Masari stressed the importance of redirecting resources to solve these critical problems, while urging the National Assembly to reassess the funding structure for public tertiary institutions, which cater to over 90% of Nigeria’s student population.
He highlighted the vital role of education in national development, calling for sustainable financing models to safeguard the future of higher education in the country.
The retreat brought together key lawmakers, including Senator Muntari Dandutse, Hon. Miriam Onuoha, and former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, to discuss strategies for resolving the pressing security and power concerns in the nation’s higher institutions.
