Nine farmers have been struck with the worst disaster after fire gutted their farm produce in Cross River State.

CONVERSEER learned that the farmers were heartbroken when they arrived at their farms on Monday (22 Jan. 2024) just to see their yam barns completely razed.

The ugly incident happened along Bishiri Road in Obudu Local Government Area of the state.

The cause of the fire is yet to be revealed but the yam barns of nine farmers were completely burned and the yams roasted.

In a goodwill message on Tuesday (23 Jan. 2024), Dr Helen Isamoh-Egodo, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in the State, noted that the immense damage caused by the fire undoubtedly will intensify the economic hardship of the victims.

She said: “I understand that these yam barns are not just a source of livelihood but also represent hard work, dedication and hope for our people. It breaks my heart to see the fruits of your labour reduced to ashes in a matter of moments.

“We have already mobilised a team of experts to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance to those affected. Our priority is to ensure that you have the necessary resources to restart your yam cultivation and regain your economic stability. We will work tirelessly to provide financial aid, agricultural inputs, and technical support to help you get back on your feet.

“Remember, it is in times like these that the true strength of a community shines through. Let us stand united, supporting and uplifting one another.”

The Commissioner assured the victims of the ministry’s affection, urging them to reach out to her office if they require any further assistance or have any concerns.
