C’River North traditional rulers smile to the bank as Higgins Peters pays 3-month stipends

By Frank Ulom

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – High Chief Higgins Peters has continued his support for traditional institutions in Cross River North Senatorial District with the payment of stipends to clan heads and paramount rulers across the region.

The latest disbursement covers three months—February, March, and April—and was paid to 120 clan heads and five paramount rulers across the district’s five local government areas. The payments were made in arrears as part of a monthly stipend initiative introduced by the community leader.

The gesture forms the second phase of a commitment made by Peters on September 6, 2025, during the Bekwara New Yam Festival, where he was also honoured with a chieftaincy title. At the event, he pledged to augment the stipends of traditional rulers in the district with ₦10,000 monthly for clan heads and ₦20,000 monthly for paramount rulers.

Peters had earlier fulfilled the pledge on November 22, 2025, when he paid three months in advance covering November, December, and January to the 120 traditional leaders across the northern senatorial district.

The recent payment therefore represents the continuation of the initiative and reinforces his promise to sustain the support for the traditional institution in recognition of its role in community leadership, peace building, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

A paramount ruler who reacted to the gesture expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that such consistent support from an individual is rare.

“In over two decades on the traditional stool, I have never witnessed this level of consistent support for the traditional institution from an individual at any time in the history of the state,” the monarch said.

He added that the initiative reflects genuine respect for traditional rulers and recognition of their role as custodians of culture and leaders within their communities.

Across Cross River North, the development has been welcomed by many who view the gesture as a reflection of Peters’ longstanding engagement with community development and support for traditional leadership structures.

With many saying his continued support for traditional institutions and communities has strengthened his influence within the socio-political landscape of Cross River State.

High Chief Higgins Peters holds the traditional titles of Emoma and Akpa Owo of Yala and Uni Ekpere (Destiny Helper) of Bekwarra Local Government Area.
