Barrister Venatius Ikem has resigned as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, citing internal divisions, a crisis of direction and a lack of leadership cohesion within the party.
Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja and the State Secretary at the party’s secretariat on Mary Slessor Avenue, Calabar.
In the letter, titled “Letter of Resignation as State Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Cross River State Chapter,” the former chairman said his resignation took immediate effect.
He described the decision as difficult but necessary after reflecting on the prevailing realities within the party and the challenges confronting its leadership.
According to him, the internal dynamics and divergent positions among party members have increasingly undermined the PDP’s ability to maintain a clear and united direction.
“As we enter a critical electoral season, I have found it increasingly difficult to reconcile my responsibilities as State Chairman with the prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions that continue to weaken the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course,” he stated.
Ikem said the party was grappling with a crisis of direction and leadership coherence, warning that the situation had significantly diminished its effectiveness.
He added that, if left unresolved, the challenges could undermine the sacrifices, investments and aspirations of loyal party members who had worked tirelessly for its success.
Despite his concerns, Ikem expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the party over the past five years, describing his tenure as a privilege.
He also acknowledged the support of party leaders and members, particularly Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, whom he credited with encouraging and supporting him during challenging moments in his political journey.
The former chairman further recognised the contribution of the PDP’s National Leader, Chief Nyesom Wike, CON, to the party’s collective efforts.
Ikem extended his appreciation to supporters across Cross River State, especially the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty and commitment throughout his political journey.
He said his decision to step aside was informed by the need for reassessment and renewal, adding that future political choices should be guided by purpose, clarity and a genuine commitment to advancing the interests of the people.
“As I step away from this position, I remain committed to the progress, stability, and development of Cross River State and our nation,” he said, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours.
The resignation comes as political parties prepare for another critical electoral season, with Ikem’s remarks highlighting concerns about internal unity and leadership within the Cross River PDP.
However, the resignation letter did not indicate whether Ikem was leaving the PDP or merely relinquishing his position as state chairman. He also did not disclose his immediate political plans.
