A total of 29 countries have signed an agreement in Shanghai, China, to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO).
Of the 29 countries, Asia accounted for 12 signatories, while Africa ranked second with 10 participating countries.
Among the 29 founding members that signed the agreement were China, Russia, Belarus, Serbia, Cuba, Brazil, Venezuela, Kazakhstan, Laos, Pakistan and Indonesia.
The WAICO, according to Chinese state agency Xinhua, will be an independent intergovernmental international organisation headquartered in Shanghai, in line with the agreement.
Under the agreement, WAICO will uphold the purposes of the United Nations Charter, remain committed to extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit, and adhere to a people-centred approach.
WAICO also aims to promote international cooperation and global governance on artificial intelligence (AI), ensuring that AI is beneficial, safe and fair, thereby promoting its healthy and orderly development for the benefit of all humanity.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi signed the agreement on behalf of the People’s Republic of China.
Among the international figures who witnessed the event was United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
