The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has made significant strides in strengthening regional cooperation through key economic and infrastructure initiatives.

A major milestone has been the development of a unified ESA Customs Code, designed to facilitate the free movement of goods and establish a single customs zone.

Colonel Assimi Goïta, President of the Alliance of Sahel States made these remarks while presenting the results of the past year during ahigh-level meeting ahead of an upcoming summit, focusing on three key areas of the AES – Defense and Security, Diplomacy and Development.

He noted that the regulatory framework aims to boost trade efficiency and economic integration across member states. In addition to trade facilitation, large-scale infrastructure projects are underway to improve regional connectivity.

He also spoke about the construction of an ESA railway network which will enhance transportation and commerce, the creation of a joint airline to foster closer economic ties.

Additionally, plans are in place to develop a regional food security reserve, ensuring the availability of essential food supplies and mitigating the risk of shortages

This high-level meeting, held three months before Mali’s presidency of AES concludes, provided an opportunity for leaders to assess progress, address challenges, and refine strategies for deepening regional cooperation.
