Arsenal, Man City out of Champions League

…as Real Madrid set up semifinal clash with Bayern Munich

By Frank Ulom

The only remaining English sides in the 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League, Arsenal and Manchester City, have been knocked out of the competition in the quarterfinals.

Both Premier League sides went into today’s game (17th April) with 2-2 and 3-3 draws from the first leg of the quarterfinals but got knocked out by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively.

The game at the Allianz Arena in Munich ended with Bayern beating Arsenal 1-0, thanks to Joshua Kimmich’s 63rd-minute goal, taking the aggregate to 3-2 in favour of the Germans, after the first leg ended 2-2 at the Emirates stadium in England last week.

Man City on the other hand were set to do a repeat of last season’s semifinal against Real Madrid that saw them lift the trophy for the first time but fell behind to Rodrygo’s 12th-minute goal in the first half.

The resumption of the second half saw City pinning Madrid to their own box and the press paid as Kevin De Bruyne equalised in the 78th minute. The game ended 1-1 after extra time.

The game went into penalties as nothing was able to separate the two sides just like the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu where the match ended 3-3.

However, Real Madrid beat Manchester City 4-3 on penalties at the Etihad Stadium, thanks to heroics from Andriy Lunin.

The results mean Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the semifinals while Borussia Dortmund who saw off Atletico Madrid on Tuesday will face PSG who also defeated Barcelona on the same day.
