FC Barcelona has expressed its condolences to club legend Lionel Messi following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68.
The club’s president and board of directors, on behalf of the entire Barcelona family, mourned Jorge Messi and extended their deepest sympathies to the Messi family.
In a statement posted on X on Saturday, Barcelona acknowledged Jorge Messi’s role in entrusting the club with the formative and most successful years of his son’s career.
“FC Barcelona thanks Jorge Messi for his commitment to our Club, for entrusting us with the beginnings and the most glorious years of his son Leo’s football career,” the club said.
Jorge Messi played a significant role in his son’s football journey, particularly during the formative years before Lionel Messi developed into one of Barcelona’s greatest players.
The Catalan club also paid tribute to Jorge Messi’s longstanding connection with the institution and his contribution to the early stages of his son’s remarkable career.
“May he rest in peace,” Barcelona added.
Jorge Messi, who was also his Messi’s long-time representative, died at the age of 68.
His death comes after decades of close involvement in Lionel Messi’s career, including the period in which the Argentine forward rose through Barcelona’s ranks to become one of the most celebrated footballers in the club’s history.
Messi spent the majority of his senior club career at Barcelona, where he established himself as a global football icon before leaving the Catalan side in 2021.
