Pre-season: ‘I’m very happy with him’ – Alonso congratulates Chelsea star after AC Milan win

Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso has congratulated midfielder Romeo Lavia for successfully completing his first full match in over two years.

The 22-year-old was among only four Chelsea players who participated for the entire duration of the pre-season friendly against AC Milan, held at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday.

Throughout the match, Lavia played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s midfield as they triumphed over Ruben Amorim’s team.

Joao Pedro opened the scoring just before halftime, heading the ball past Lorenzo Torriani from close range.

Less than a minute into the second half, the Blues striker increased his tally, again finding the net from within the six-yard box against the AC Milan goalkeeper.

Moises Caicedo sealed the victory shortly thereafter, scoring a volley with the outside of his foot from outside the box.

While Lavia did not score, he made a significant impact by orchestrating play in midfield and disrupting the opposition’s rhythm. Alongside Robert Sanchez, Josh Acheampong, and Marco Palestra, the Belgian completed the full 90 minutes.

This match marked the first occasion since August 4, 2024, when Chelsea faced Manchester City in a pre-season friendly, that Lavia had played a complete game.

After the Blues’ win against AC Milan, Alonso praised him in an interview with club media, stating, “I am very happy with him because he has a break, a block (while gesturing to his head).”

The Spaniard added, “he was fatigued, but I told him, ‘Let him play, let him enjoy the 90 minutes.’ He finished the match exhausted, so I believe he is truly happy.”
