The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.
SaharaReporters previously reported that Uzuegbu’s promotion was delayed due to multiple corruption allegations against him.
A source revealed that the tipping point was the case of an Abia State businessman who was abducted, detained for three days, and extorted of N62 million.
The source stated that “following the SaharaReporters’ investigation report indicting CP Kanayo Uzuegbu in the N62 million extortion at the Enugu State Command Anti-kidnapping squad unit, the PSC has finally dropped his name in the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) promotion.”
On February 27, SaharaReporters reported a shocking twist in the ongoing investigation into the alleged N62 million extortion by the Enugu State Police Command’s anti-kidnapping squad.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) Chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, abruptly withdrew from the investigation without providing a reason, sparking widespread outrage.
A source revealed to SaharaReporters that the chairman, under intense pressure, directed the parties to return to the Inspector-General of Police, citing the commission’s lack of authority to investigate the matter.
He also instructed the Enugu anti-kidnapping squad to return a seized Toyota Hilux vehicle to Enugu, despite an earlier directive to bring it to the PSC office in Abuja.
In a surprising turn of events, the PSC on Tuesday announced Uzuegbu’s promotion to Assistant Inspector General of Police.
The commission also approved the appointment of new Commissioners of Police for Oyo and Enugu State Commands, with CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa taking over as Enugu State police commissioner and CP Ademola Johnson, Principal Staff officer to the IGP appointed the Oyo police commissioner.
Mr Ikechukwu Ani, spokesman for the PSC, in a statement on Tuesday, said: “CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, Commissioner of Police Enugu State Command promoted to the next rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), was a former Assistant Commissioner Operations Zone 9, Umuahia; Area Commander, Owerri; Area Commander Karu, Nasarawa state; Commander Switch Operation Switch, Port Harcourt; Deputy Commissioner Finance and Admin Edo State Command, DCP, state CID, Osun State and Commissioner of Police Operations, Communication, Force Headquarters, Abuja.”
“CP Giwa was former DCP Operations Kaduna and Imo State Commands; ACP Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters Abuja; and CSP A, Commissioner of Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, among other postings in the Police Mobile Force,” the statement said.
Ani also disclosed that the commission approved the promotion of eight Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners of Police.
“They are Abdullahi Kamba Usman, Sani Abdu, Ifeanyi Owo, Vincent Orole, Elisha Atikinkpan, and Margaret Okonkwo. Others are Alhasan Aliyu Guga and Imo Owinizi Ezekiel.
“The newly promoted senior Police Officers were subjected to Written examinations and interactive oral interviews,” he said.
