Dem Official Won’t Attend Party Convention Amid Fear Of Anti-Jewish Harassment

Michigan’s attorney general said she won’t attend next month’s Democratic primary convention over fears of antisemitism.

Democratic Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said she won’t attend the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP)’s nominating convention in August over concerns for her safety during a Thursday roundtable event hosted by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Michigan Advance reported. This comes after federal investigators said they believe Hezbollah inspired the March attack on Temple Israel in Michigan’s West Bloomfield Township.

Nessel’s office and the MDP did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

“I feel like my presence isn’t going to be welcome. I don’t want to get chased around. I don’t want to get harassed. I don’t want to get yelled and screamed at. I don’t want to get booed off the stage, irrespective of what I’m saying,” Nessel reportedly said during the roundtable. “And I believe that if I go, that is what will happen because it’s been happening to me.”

Nessel also criticized Democratic party leaders for not addressing concerns she previously raised about party members harassing her in the past, according to Michigan Advance.

Approximately 60% of Americans at least somewhat agreed that antisemitism is a “serious problem,” according to a July 2025 survey by the ADL’s Center for Antisemitism Research. Meanwhile, approximately 25% Democratic respondents expressed concern about antisemitism within their party.

“This cannot continue, and the fact of the matter is, we have to be able to be a society where we can have intelligent discourse and debate about ideas without people being threatened, and certainly without people carrying out those threats,” Nessel reportedly said, “speak[ing] as a member of the Democratic Party here in Michigan.”

MDP spokesperson Derrick Honeyman said in response to Nessel’s comments that the party is committed to “ensuring party-hosted events are safe and secure environments for all attendees,” according to Michigan Advance.

“We reject antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hateful conduct,” Honeyman reportedly said. “We are working diligently with stakeholders, elected officials, and party membership to prepare for our August convention and look forward to welcoming Michigan Democrats to the Lansing Center on August 29.”
