Education Department Sues Schools For Allegedly Letting Boy Dominate Girls’ Sports

A California sports league and two school districts are being sued for allegedly forcing girls to share single-sex spaces with boys in athletic competitions.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) and Jurupa Unified School District (JUSD) are allegedly forcing girls to compete against boys in middle school and high school athletics, according to a joint Title IX complaint filed by Defending Education (DE) and the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Education, DE, JUSD, and CUSD did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. CIF declined to comment.

DE filed the complaint for a parent with daughters in CUSP schools who compete against JUSD students in CIF athletic competitions. Her oldest daughter was allegedly forced to compete against a boy in a state track championship.

JUSD has a bylaw stating student athletes shall “participate in programs and activities consistent with their gender identity,” the complaint alleged. CIF allegedly let a trans-identifying boy from JUSD dominate girls’ track and field championships in both 2025 and 2026.

When the parent discussed concerns about her daughter sharing intimate spaces with trans-identifying boys in June 2025, her school’s principal allegedly suggested that her daughter could use alternative spaces such as the nurse’s office instead, according to the complaint. The principal also allegedly told her that there is no way to know if a student is transgender since the school does not require students to disclose such.

After the parent subsequently asked the CUSP Board of Trustees for clarification on how they plan to enforce President Donald Trump’s January 2025 executive order prohibiting males from sharing single-sex spaces with females in federally funded institutions, a representative from the board allegedly told her that the school had no intention of doing so until a court ordered it to, according to the complaint.

These actions violate Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, per the complaint. Title IX prohibits any educational institution that receives federal funds from discriminating on the basis of sex.

“CIF, JUSD, and CUSD are prioritizing the desires of self-professed ‘transgender girls’ over the girls for whom Title IX itself was passed,” DE stated in a press release Thursday.

This complaint comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that banning trans-identifying boys from female sports teams does not violate Title IX or the Equal Protection Clause, the DCNF previously reported. Over two dozen states restrict participation in girls’ and women’s sports to sex.
