Eulogising Mustapha Ado Muhammad, Visionary Businessman, Industrialist and Philanthropist

Mustapha Ado Muhammad

Mustapha Ado Muhammad (born July 27, 1958) is a distinguished Nigerian businessman, industrialist, and philanthropist, celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to Northern Nigeria’s industrial development. As the Founder and Chairman of Ammasco International Limited, he pioneered the establishment of the region’s first lubricant blending plant, revolutionising the automotive industry and setting new standards for quality and innovation.

Early Life and Education

Muhammad was born on July 27, 1958, in Katsina, Nigeria. He began his formal education at Gobirawa Primary School, Kano, completing it in 1977. He furthered his studies at Government Secondary School, Gwale, Kano, where he graduated in 1982. Recognising his passion for management and finance, he pursued a course in Accounting at the Kano State Polytechnic’s School of Management Studies, earning a National Diploma in 1985 and a Higher National Diploma in 1989.

Entrepreneurial Journey and the Birth of AMMASCO

In 1997, Muhammad founded Alhaji Muhammad Mustapha Ado Supply Company (AMMASCO), marking the beginning of his journey in the lubricant industry. The idea to create AMMASCO was born from his keen observation of the Nigerian automotive sector. He noticed that many vehicles emitted excessive smoke due to the poor quality of imported lubricants. Determined to address this issue, he embarked on extensive research and experimentation to develop superior lubricant solutions tailored to the Nigerian market.

AMMASCO became Northern Nigeria’s first indigenous lubricant blending plant, setting a precedent for quality and innovation. Today, the company is recognised as one of Nigeria’s leading lubricant manufacturers, trusted by businesses and individuals alike.

Expansion into a Conglomerate

Under Muhammad’s visionary leadership, AMMASCO evolved into a conglomerate with diverse subsidiaries, including:

  • AMMASCO International Limited: Specialising in lubricant manufacturing
  • AMMASCO Petrochemicals Company Limited: Focusing on liquefied petroleum gas and allied products
  • AMMASCO Oil and Gas Limited: Operating within the oil and gas sector

AMMASCO International Limited is now one of the largest employers in Northern Nigeria, providing over 3,700 full-time jobs across its factories and offices.

In 2021, Muhammad expanded his portfolio by launching AMMASCO Communication Limited, which secured a license to operate radio and television stations. That same year, he was appointed a Non-Executive Director at Lotus Bank, further cementing his influence in Nigeria’s business landscape.

Leadership in LUPAN

He currently serves as the Chairman of the Lubricant Producers Association of Nigeria (LUPAN), an organisation that includes major industry players such as Mobil, Oando, ASCON, Conoil, and AMMASCO. Under his leadership, LUPAN has continued to advance industry standards and foster collaboration among its members.

Philanthropic Contributions

A passionate philanthropist, Muhammad has dedicated significant resources to empowering communities and supporting technical education. Through AMMASCO International Limited, he partners annually with the Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association to provide essential technical tools to thousands of technicians nationwide. His philanthropic efforts have improved livelihoods and strengthened Nigeria’s technical workforce.

Recognition and Awards

Mustapha Muhammad’s exceptional achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including:

  • The Sun Industrialist of the Year Award (2020)
  • African Leadership Award – Excellent Achievers Award (2015)
  • Nigeria Automobile Technician Association Award for Best Refined Lubricant (2020)
  • Kano State Chamber of Commerce Award of Excellence (2018)
  • Bank of Industry Hall of Fame Award (2014)
