FDA Bans Red Dye No. 3 Over Cancer Concerns

Washington – In a landmark decision aimed at enhancing food safety, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a ban on the use of Red Dye No. 3.

The synthetic colouring agent, derived from petroleum, has been linked to cancer in animal studies and is widely used in a range of food and beverage products to impart a vibrant red cherry hue.

Red Dye No. 3, which has been under scrutiny for decades, is a common ingredient in products such as candies, cereals, fruit cocktail cherries, and strawberry-flavoured milkshakes.

Despite its widespread use, health advocates have long raised concerns about the dye’s safety, urging regulatory bodies to act. Food manufacturers have been given until January 15, 2027, to reformulate their products to comply with the new directive.

This move aligns with growing public awareness of the potential health risks associated with artificial food additives.

The decision also marks a significant victory for consumer safety advocates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has campaigned for the removal of synthetic dyes like Yellow Dye No. 5 and Red Dye No. 40 from food products.

“The ban is a step in the right direction,” said a spokesperson for a consumer advocacy group. “We hope this paves the way for further regulations that prioritise public health.”

The FDA’s ruling is expected to prompt significant changes in the food industry, requiring manufacturers to find safer alternatives for achieving the vivid red colour that appeals to consumers.

Public health experts have lauded the ban as a preventive measure against potential health hazards, underscoring the importance of prioritising food safety in a market heavily reliant on synthetic additives.

As the deadline approaches, industry stakeholders and health authorities will likely collaborate to ensure a smooth transition.

Consumers are encouraged to remain informed about the ingredients in their food and to support brands that prioritise natural and safer alternatives.
