The Cross River Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) has charged motorists in the state on the need to protect other road users like the cyclists and pedestrians.

A release by the Command’s Sector Public Education Officer (SPEO), Mr. Samuel Otih said, the State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joseph Toby gave the charge at a Commemorative Church service held on Sunday at the Wesley Cathedral, Methodist Church of Nigeria, Beecroft Street, Calabar, Cross River State to round-off the activities scheduled for the commemoration of the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week 2025.

Represented by the the Sector Head of Operations, DCC Eyong Eyong, the Sector Commander emphasized the importance and purpose of the sensitization campaign stressing that the theme for this year’s event: “Streets for Life; #Make Walking Safe, #Make Cycling Safe”, “reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect those who use our roads in the capacity of cyclists and Pedestrians – the exposed road users”.

Eyong who took the only Bible reading for the day on behalf of the Sector Commander from John 13:31-35, appreciated the church leadership for the opportunity to address the congregation and read the Corps Marshal’s Text of Address for the Commemorative Church Service and addressed some issues raised by the presiding priest.

On his part, the Bishop of Calabar Arch Dioses, His Grace, Most Rev. Amb. Chimezuo Nwankpa who spoke on the theme of love from  the passage earlier read, prayed for God’s protection over the Command and the Corps at large.

He also  pledged the church’s support to work in synergy with the command  to sustain the message of safety in their subsequent programmes.

Senator Princess Florence Ita-Giwa and other top dignitaries were present at the service.

Meanwhile, the Command lined up series of events to sensitize the  motoring public on the importance of responsible driving behavior in order “to prevent or reduce Road Traffic Crashes on our roads especially those involving vulnerable road users”.

Some of these activities include a sensitization walk/awareness rally on Tuesday; strategic  visits to schools for youth safety education talks on Wednesday; Advocacy visit to fleet operators by the  Road Safety Officers Wives Association (ROSOWA) on Thursda and Juma’at Service on Friday.

ROSOWA is expected to visit the orphanage homes on Saturday and a Commemorative Church Service on Sunday.
