Ghana Armed Forces Arrest Suspected Gunman Amid Rising Tension in Bawku

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have confirmed the arrest of a suspected gunman during a cordon and search operation in Binduri, in the northern part of the country, as part of efforts to restore calm in the conflict-hit Bawku enclave.

According to a statement from the GAF, the operation was triggered in the early hours of Monday after troops deployed in the area heard sporadic gunfire near the Binduri Central Market.

A joint team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion, the Joint Task Force, and the Police conducted a detailed search, leading to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons.

Items retrieved included an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, an empty M16 magazine, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a helmet, and a pair of boots.

The suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation. The GAF called on the public to support security efforts by cooperating with personnel to help restore peace in the area.
