ICPC arrests 5 alleged vote-buyers during by-elections, reruns

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC officials on Saturday arrested five for alleged vote buying.

CONVERSEER learned that the five suspects were allegedly involved in the buying of votes during the February 3, 2024 by-elections and rerun.

According to the ICPC, three were arrested in a polling unit of Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency in Sokoto State with the sum of N3,105,400 allegedly buying votes.

The other two were arrested with N500,000 allegedly buying votes in Yelwa Primary School in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

“Officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have today (Saturday) arrested 3 persons suspected to be vote buyers in Sokoto State during the by-elections monitoring exercise.

“3 males aged 48, 37 and 38 were caught in a polling unit of Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency in Sokoto State with the sum of N3,105,400 within the voting premises.

“In a related development, the ICPC Adamawa State Election monitoring team arrested two suspects within the vicinity of Yelwa Primary School in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area with the sum of N500,000 suspected to be for vote buying during the by-elections.

“All the suspects have been taken into the custody of the Commission and investigations have commenced, ICPC will work with INEC in the prosecution of the cases,” the ICPC said in a statement posted on its verified X account.
