ISWAP Crisis Deepens As Four Senior Members Reportedly Executed

The leadership crisis within the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) is reportedly escalating, with intelligence indicating that four members of the group’s Shura Council have been executed.

According to intelligence obtained by Zagazola Makama, posted on his X said the four senior members, who were reportedly arrested by ISWAP fighters last week, were allegedly executed by a senior commander identified as Ba Shuwa at the group’s Kwatan Dila enclave on Wednesday, August 6.

The reported executions are believed to have intensified existing factional tensions and disagreements within the terrorist organisation operating across the Lake Chad region.

The four Shura Council members were reportedly detained amid an ongoing leadership dispute within the group. However, the specific allegations that led to their arrest and subsequent execution could not be independently established.

Intelligence sources by Makama said the development could point to an internal purge as rival commanders seek to consolidate control over the organisation.

The reported executions also come amid sustained military operations targeting ISWAP’s leadership, fighters and logistics networks across the Lake Chad axis.

Makama noted that the development could have implications for the group’s command structure, particularly if other senior commanders interpret the executions as part of a wider purge.

The Shura Council plays a significant role in ISWAP’s decision-making structure, including issues relating to leadership, military operations, administration and resource management.

The removal of four members could therefore deepen divisions within the group and further undermine cohesion among its senior commanders.

Security agencies are reportedly monitoring the situation closely to assess the implications of the internal crisis and identify opportunities to exploit existing divisions within the terrorist organisation.

The development could also create opportunities for security forces to encourage defections and surrenders while gathering intelligence on the group’s leadership, operations and support networks.

Security sources, however, cautioned that the situation remains fluid and could trigger retaliatory actions among rival factions.

The reported executions come as Nigerian forces and regional partners sustain intelligence, surveillance and military operations against ISWAP positions and logistics networks across the Lake Chad region.
