Kay Pavlou’s ‘Two Homelands’ to be Showcased in Melbourne’s Greek-Cypriot Communities

After a poignant screening in Yarraville last November, award-winning director Kay Pavlou will bring her latest documentary, “Two Homelands,” to Melbourne’s northern suburbs in February, targeting areas with strong Greek and Cypriot communities, The Greek Herald reports.

Marking 51 years since Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus, the film blends commemoration with personal testimony. Six senior Greek Cypriot Australians recount their wartime experiences, migration to Australia, and longing for peace. As members of the diaspora, they speak of living with their hearts in two homelands.

Screenings will take place on Saturday, February 15, and Sunday, February 16, at Thornbury Picture House. Each event will open with Pavlou’s 2023 short film, “Ghost Town” – a personal exploration of the abandoned coastal town of Famagusta in Turkish-occupied Cyprus – followed by a Q&A with the director.

Northcote MP Kat Theophanous, herself of Greek Cypriot heritage, will introduce the February 15 screening at 4.30 p.m.

“For so many of us, the journey of migration is more than just a story – it’s embedded in our identity. “Two Homelands” captures the resilience and hope behind these journeys. It reminds us of homes left behind, of new beginnings, and of the strength of our spirit,” Theophanous was quoted as saying.
