Lagos Assembly Clarifies DSS Presence: Operatives Invited for Security Purposes, Not to Seal Offices

The Lagos State House of Assembly has provided clarification regarding the presence of operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) at the assembly complex in the early hours of Monday, February 17, 2025.

The Acting Clerk of the House, A. Ottun, stated that the security agencies were invited to ensure safety and maintain order, not to seal off offices.

The clarification comes amid controversy over the DSS’s presence at the legislative complex, which some had interpreted as an attempt to disrupt the assembly’s operations.

In a letter dated February 14, 2025, and signed by the Acting Clerk, the Assembly management informed security agencies in Lagos about “credible intelligence that indicated plans to forcibly reinstate the impeached Speaker on February 18, 2025.” The letter, with reference number LSHA/FAD/0/7554/323, was addressed to the DSS Director in Lagos and the heads of other security agencies in the state.

The letter, titled “Urgent: Enhanced Security Measures for LSHA Premises,” emphasized the need to prevent any security breaches at the Assembly. It highlighted that the planned reinstatement of the impeached Speaker posed “a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members.”

“The impeached Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly plans to resume office on February 18, 2025, as the Speaker, poses a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members. We kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday, February 16, 2025, by increasing the presence of your men and as well observe strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises till further notice,” the letter read.

The Acting Clerk reiterated that the invitation to security agencies was solely for the purpose of maintaining order and preventing any disruptions. “The assembly called upon security agencies to ensure security, help maintain order, and not seal off offices,” Ottun stated.

The Assembly’s decision to involve security agencies was described as a proactive measure to safeguard the legislative complex and its members. The management expressed confidence in the security agencies’ ability to handle the situation professionally and ensure the safety of all stakeholders.

“We look forward to your prompt attention, Sir. Thank you,” the letter concluded, underscoring the urgency of the request.

The clarification from the Acting Clerk aims to dispel rumors and reassure the public that the DSS presence was not an attempt to interfere with the assembly’s operations. The Assembly emphasized its commitment to maintaining order and upholding democratic principles.

“The safety and security of our members and staff are paramount. We took this step to prevent any potential threats and ensure that the assembly can continue its work without disruption,” Ottun added.
