The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the proposed 50 percent hike in telecommunications tariff.

The two parties signed the MoU at a meeting convened by the federal government on Monday over the telecommunications tariff hike.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, signed the agreement on behalf of the federal government, while the NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero and the General Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Ugboaja, represented the labour union.

The NLC had strongly opposed the tariff hike and called for a one-day nationwide mass protest on February 4.

According to the MoU, resolutions were reached for the parties to sit together in a technical group to resolve most of the thorny areas raised during the discussion.

Parts of the resolution include the setting up of a joint committee with five representatives each from the federal government and the NLC.
