Onana is one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history ? Former Man. United midfielder, Nemanja Matic

Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has launched a scathing attack on current goalkeeper Andre Onana, branding him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.

Matic’s comments came in response to Onana’s recent assertion that United are “way better” than French side Lyon, ahead of their Europa League quarter-final clash.

Manchester United, enduring a turbulent domestic season that sees them languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, will face Lyon on Thursday, April 10, in the first leg of their European tie. Despite their league woes, the English side remains unbeaten in Europe. Lyon, meanwhile, sits fifth in Ligue 1.

Following Sunday’s goalless draw in the Manchester derby, Onana expressed confidence about the upcoming fixture, stating that although the match against Lyon would not be easy, he believed United were the superior side.

Onana’s remarks did not sit well with Matic, who was visibly irked when asked to respond. The Serbian international, who had stints with both Manchester United and Chelsea during his time in the Premier League, pulled no punches in his assessment of the Cameroonian goalkeeper.

“You know, I respect everyone but to say that then you need to give the answer,” Matic said. “If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history, you need to take care of what you are talking about.”

Matic added that had the comment come from legendary figures such as David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar, it would have carried weight. “But if you’re one of the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history, then he needs to show that before he says anything. We will see,” he said.

Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, has faced criticism for a series of underwhelming performances since his arrival, with his form and consistency under increasing scrutiny from fans and pundits alike. The Europa League tie against Lyon is now set against a backdrop of renewed tension within the United camp as they seek redemption in European competition.
