‘Our leaders don’t want us to breathe’, Obidient movement decries Nigeria’s economic hardship

NCP cautions INEC against rigging of Kogi, Bayelsa governorship elections

Dr Tanko Yunusa, the Interim Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, has accused Nigeria’s political leaders of suffocating the masses through harsh economic policies and lack of accountability.

Speaking on Friday at the North-East Leadership Summit in Gombe State, themed “The Fundamental Rights of a Nigerian Citizen,” Yunusa painted a vivid picture of the growing hardship faced by everyday Nigerians: from rising costs of living to escalating insecurity.

“It is as if our leaders do not want us to breathe,” Yunusa said, his voice heavy with frustration. “How else do you explain the lack of accountability? How do you justify the incessant increase in tariffs without reason? Nigerians can no longer afford three square meals a day. People are not even sure that if they move from Point A to Point B, they will arrive safely.”

The event, attended by activists, youth leaders, and concerned citizens, became a rallying point for calls for better governance. Yunusa did not mince words as he criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government’s economic policies, which he described as “suffocating” the people.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to rise to the demands of true leadership. “We are not merely requesting. Nigeria demands good governance built on security, healthcare, economic stability, and poverty alleviation. This is the core message of Peter Obi, which has resonated with us and given birth to the Obidient Movement,” Yunusa declared, drawing applause from the crowd.

Beyond the criticism, Yunusa reminded those in power that leadership is a temporary privilege, not a tool for oppression. “History does not forget,” he warned. “When leaders ignore the cries of their people, they write their legacy in shame. Nigerians deserve better and we will keep demanding it.”

Yunusa called on Nigerian youths to remain steadfast and engaged. “Our strength lies in our unity. We will not be silenced,” he said.
