Rights Lawyer Odinkalu Urges Buhari to End Deception About Wealth and Income Sources

Human rights lawyer and activist, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has told former President Muhammadu Buhari to stop lying and deceiving Nigerians about the status of his wealth and sources of income as he is not as poor as he wants the public to believe.

Odinkalu, a former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), was reacting to Buhari’s revelation that he is currently suffering hardship after spending eight years in office as President, and now relies on the income from renting out one of his two houses in Kaduna State for his family’s sustenance.

The immediate past President who made the confession while speaking to the BBC Hausa service on Monday, said he left office without corruptly enriching himself, hence his resolve to use the rentals from his house to take care of his needs.

“After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding,” Buhari said in the interview.

“After eight years in office, nobody can accuse me of illicit enrichment. I have nothing to hide. I have only three houses, one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I’ve rented out one of them to sustain myself and cover my feeding expenses,” the former president added.

But while reacting to Buhari’s claims, Odinkalu told the ex-President to stop lying about his wealth and acquisitions as he is no longer contesting for the office of President, which he once described as office of Messiah.

Odinkalu who gave the counsel on his official X @ChidiOdinkalu on Tuesday, wrote:

“Someone should please tell Muhammadu Buhari that he is no longer running for the office of Messiah, therefore, no longer has any need to keep lying about his earthly acquisitions.”
