Tesla abandons its own 4680 battery due to energy density as charging performance not meeting expectations

Due to cost-effectiveness issues, Tesla will abandon its own 4680 batteries and rely on third-party suppliers.

South Korean media also reported that South Korean battery manufacturers are currently “gearing up and actively preparing for battle”, and from all indications, they are planning to mass-produce cylindrical batteries with a diameter of 46 mm.

Tesla’s 4680 battery is a new battery technology announced by Tesla at the Battery Day event in 2020. This battery is characterised by a cylindrical battery with a diameter of 46 mm and a height of 80 mm. Compared with the previous 2170 battery, the single cell energy density of the 4680 battery has increased by 5 times, the power has increased by 6 times compared to the battery with tabs, and the power output has increased by 6 times.

Tesla announced a new manufacturing technology called dry electrode battery (DBE) at Battery Day 2021, which greatly improved battery performance through a new silicon anode. However, it turns out that 4680 batteries are difficult to manufacture and their performance is not as good as 2170 batteries.

The 4680 batteries currently produced by Tesla still use a similar chemical composition to the 2170 NMC batteries, and do not implement the previously promised silicon negative electrode and DBE.

Worse still, since the new batteries are larger, it’s more difficult to dissipate heat within the battery pack, which could also be one of the reasons for Cybertruck’s poor charging performance.

So far, Tesla’s 4680 batteries are not only inferior to 2170 batteries in terms of energy density and charging performance, but are also more expensive, which is one of the reasons why Tesla’s financial report at the end of the first quarter was disappointing.

It was reported that Tesla announced that its Giga Texas factory in Austin, Texas has produced 50 million 4680 batteries . The company posted a picture of Giga Texas team members on social media platforms to celebrate the achievement of this milestone.

However, this cannot hide the challenges faced in producing 4680 batteries. The latest news is that LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI are actively preparing to start mass production of 4680 batteries.
