The United States Mission to Nigeria has announced a comprehensive investigation into the utilization of past aid allocated to Nigeria and other countries.
This move comes in response to President Donald Trump’s decision on January 20, 2025, to suspend all foreign aid for 90 days, citing concerns over global destabilization and the misalignment of aid with American interests.
The investigation follows growing calls for a thorough review of funds disbursed by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), particularly in the health sector. In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the US Mission to Nigeria confirmed that monitoring systems are in place to track the effectiveness of past assistance.
“Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients,” the mission stated.
The US Mission also took the opportunity to condemn the ongoing violence perpetrated by Boko Haram in Nigeria and the broader region.
“The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” the statement declared.

The mission highlighted that Boko Haram was officially designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the US Secretary of State on November 14, 2013. This designation aims to block the group’s assets, restrict its fundraising activities, prosecute its members, and prevent their travel to the United States.
