Canada produced one of the standout performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cruising to a commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar to record the country’s first-ever win at the tournament.
However, the historic triumph was overshadowed by a horrific injury to midfielder Ismael Kone, whose World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end after a dangerous challenge in the second half.
Playing before a capacity crowd at Vancouver Stadium, Canada dominated from the opening whistle and raced into a 3-0 lead before the match took a distressing turn eight minutes after the restart. Kone, who had just received the ball in midfield, was caught by a late challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo.
The Sassuolo midfielder immediately collapsed in agony, with players from both teams visibly shaken as medical personnel rushed onto the pitch.
The severity of the injury was evident, with Kone’s leg appearing to be broken.
Emotions boiled over as players confronted one another following the incident, leading to a brief scuffle before order was restored.
Madibo was shown a straight red card for the challenge, while Qatar were reduced to nine men after Homam El Amin had earlier been sent off for a professional foul on Tajon Buchanan in the first half.
Despite the devastating injury, Kone received a standing ovation from the home crowd as he gave a thumbs-up while being stretchered off the field and taken to hospital for treatment.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch admitted the incident had deeply affected his players and staff.
“It was right in front of us, and everyone could hear the bone snap,” Marsch said after the match.
“I haven’t spoken to Ismael yet, but he’s at the hospital. He will prepare for surgery. Everybody’s a little shaken by the whole experience because of the nature of the injury, and also because Ismael is a big part of the heart of our team. It will be a big loss for us.”
Marsch praised Kone’s courage despite the painful injury, noting that the midfielder’s gesture to supporters reflected his character.
“You saw that he was waving to the crowd and almost making everyone at ease. It is a statement about Ismael, but also this is an incredible team.
“I have been telling people for years about the character of this group. You got to see how everyone was crushed, but we had to find a way to stay focused.”
Canada responded in remarkable fashion after the lengthy stoppage, adding three more goals to complete an emphatic 6-0 victory. During the second-half hydration break, an emotional Marsch was seen in tears, while substitute Nathan Saliba, who replaced the injured Kone, paid tribute by holding up his teammate’s shirt after scoring Canada’s fourth goal.
Marsch expressed confidence that Kone would recover from the setback.
“He will be back stronger than ever and he will continue to have a great career. I said at the water break that he would want us to finish this game, and that is what the guys did.”
The Canadian coach also revealed that Madibo visited his team’s dressing room after the final whistle to apologise for the challenge.
“He came into the dressing room to apologise. I don’t think he meant such a gruesome tackle. I don’t fault him for that, but I don’t understand their reaction from their bench,” Marsch added.
The convincing victory leaves Canada on the verge of a place in the Round of 32 after collecting four points from their opening two matches, having drawn 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in their tournament opener.
“A point against Switzerland in their final group match will secure qualification, while a victory would see the hosts finish top of the group.
Reflecting on the team’s unity, Marsch said the bond within the squad had been evident since he took charge.
“You can see the brotherhood. It is one of the first things I noticed when I took on this role, how close they are and how connected they are.
“In a moment like this, I don’t think they need me so much, they have each other. Their families are here and we have a family barbecue tomorrow and we will enjoy that, and he will be on our minds.”
