The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Board of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has fully accredited several tuition-free degree-awarding institutions.
These institutions provide unique opportunities for Nigerian students to pursue higher education without the burden of tuition fees. The accredited institutions are:
- Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC), Wudil, Kano State
- Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna
- Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna
- Nigeria Army University, Biu
- Nigeria Maritime Academy, Delta
- Nigerian Army College of Nursing & Air Force College of Nursing, Kaduna
- Armed Forces Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Mechatronics School (AFEME)
These institutions integrate military and civilian staff and students, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. They are accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), NUC, the Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN), and the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE).
Free Tuition and No ASUU Strikes
AFEME Mechatronics School and the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) offer free tuition for their degree programmes. Moreover, these institutions are not affected by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strikes, ensuring uninterrupted academic activities.
AFIT Admission Details
AFIT is currently accepting applications for the 2024/2025 academic session. Students can apply for a wide range of programmes across different levels:
Undergraduate Courses (B.Sc/B.Eng)
AFIT offers courses in Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, International Relations, and more. The minimum UTME score for degree programmes is 180.
National Diploma (ND)
AFIT’s ND programmes include Aircraft Engineering Technology, Welding and Fabrication Technology, and Business Administration, with a minimum UTME score of 140.
Higher National Diploma (HND) and Postgraduate Programmes
HND and postgraduate courses in specialised fields like Aerospace Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, and Logistics are also available.
Nigerian Maritime University, Warri, Delta State
Students can also consider the Nigerian Maritime University for degree programmes in Ports Management, Marine Engineering, Fisheries, and Environmental Management. The minimum UTME score for admission is 180, and tuition, including accommodation, costs ₦50,000 annually.
