EU Prohibits Harmful AI Systems

The European Union (EU) has banned the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems considered harmful to people’s safety or rights.

The bloc began the implementation of the laws on Sunday to guarantee the safety and transparency of AI systems in the market.

The Act’s main features include additional standards for AI literacy training and prohibitions on some AI systems that are thought to present an “unacceptable risk.”

It encompasses a wide range of users’ cases from consumer applications to physical locations, where AI may manifest and engage with people.

Reports state that companies, regardless of their headquarters will face fines if found to utilise AI technologies in the EU with unacceptable risks.

Additionally, companies that default would pay up to €35 million (about $36 million) or 7% of their previous fiscal year’s revenue, whichever is higher.
