The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), in collaboration with the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), has successfully concluded a four-day capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening the professional competence of lecturers and technologists in the institution’s Faculty of Engineering.
The intensive training focused on modernizing teaching approaches and aligning instructional delivery with contemporary accreditation standards, as part of ongoing efforts to reposition engineering education in line with global best practices.
A key highlight of the programme was the introduction of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), a student-centered model that emphasizes measurable learning outcomes, practical skills acquisition, and continuous assessment. The approach is designed to ensure that graduates are equipped with real-world competencies relevant to industry needs.
In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Engr. Professor Simon Odey, stressed the importance of continuous professional development in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. He urged participants to embrace innovation and adapt to emerging trends in teaching and learning.
“This training equips faculty with essential skills in Continuous Quality Improvement and the design of curricula aligned with global standards such as the Washington Accord,” he said. “By focusing on what students can demonstrably achieve at the end of their programmes, we ensure that degrees from UNICROSS are globally competitive.”
Participants were taken through practical sessions on curriculum design, effective instructional delivery, and student evaluation methods, with emphasis on competency-based learning and real-world application of knowledge.
The programme also featured modules on accreditation processes, innovative teaching strategies, and mechanisms for improving classroom engagement, drawing from international benchmarks in engineering education.
