The Gambia and Senegal have reinforced their defense and security cooperation following a bilateral meeting in the capital Banjul, prompted by renewed armed attacks near their shared border.
Defense Ministers General (ret.) Birame Diop of Senegal and Brigadier General (ret.) Sering Modou Njie of The Gambia discussed the activation of joint military and security committees and the implementation of key agreements, including the 2017 defense cooperation accord and a 2018 protocol allowing cross-border operations.
Both sides emphasized the need for stronger coordination to address growing security threats in the region.
The meeting came days after an armed attack in the Senegalese town of Djinaky, near the Gambian border, where businesses were looted and mobile phones stolen.
The Senegalese military has since launched operations in the Bignona area, resulting in one soldier injured and another missing.
The two countries also pledged to accelerate the implementation of the Diomaye Plan, a new initiative aimed at stabilizing the Casamance region, which has faced decades of separatist unrest.
