A University of Chester student with a passion for music is looking forward to a bright future in education after striking a chord with her studies.
Tianjiao Xiang, a soon-to-be graduate in the MA Education, Society and Globalisation programme, has made tremendous progress since the start of her journey studying in the UK BA Popular Music Performance.
About to graduate at Chester Cathedral in March, Tianjiao – from Jingmen, Hubei, China – will exit her Master’s programme with a Distinction. She impressed her tutors gaining high marks in all modules, especially her dissertation focusing on the importance of embedding creativity in learning/teaching pedagogy in higher education.
Tianjiao also excelled with presentation skills, delivering two incredible digital talks; one on the impact of authoritarian parenting styles in China, and the second on the impact of dyslexia on young children’s holistic wellbeing.
Dr Paula Hamilton, Programme Leader for MA Education, Society and Globalisation, said: “It has been amazing to watch Tianjiao grow in confidence over the last year. When she joined the MA she was reluctant to engage in discussions and assignment writing as she doubted her English language and writing skills. However, that was quickly overcome and Tianjiao became one of the main contributors during classroom discussion.
“Her digital presentations were of such a high standard that they are now being used as exemplars for other students. Tutors and University support services work closely with students on MA Education Society and Globalisation (Now retitled MA Social Justice and Globalisation in Education) to build on their interests and strengths as well as nurturing aspects that students feel less confident about’.”
Tianjiao added: “I truly appreciate how the MA programme encouraged me to think critically and deeply about education and my future career.
“Initially, I believed educational studies were solely about learning how to become a better educator. However, throughout my studies, I discovered that educational studies encompass a wide range of areas within social science. These include the relationships between education and socio-political factors, laws and policies, equality, mental wellbeing, cultural differences, and so much more.
“The fascinating content offered with the MA programme has provided me with an in-depth understanding of the current educational framework, while also equipping me with the ability to critically evaluate challenges and identify opportunities for meaningful transformation. I now see education as a powerful tool for driving societal development. Beyond academic growth, I also want to highlight the supportive and enriching learning environment, which allowed me to excel and reach my full potential.
“The MA programme has been instrumental in my personal and professional development. It allowed me to explore topics I am passionate about through research, which was not only deeply rewarding but also strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills. Delivering digital presentations significantly boosted my confidence in public speaking and my ability to articulate complex concepts effectively.
“Additionally, the programme has helped develop a range of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, time management, teamwork, and effective communication. These skills will undoubtedly benefit me in my future career.
“In the future, I aspire to become an educator in the field of music, where I can blend my passion for music with my dedication to education.
“My goal is to create a learning environment where education is not just about acquiring knowledge but about inspiring creativity, fostering personal growth, and empowering students to think critically and independently.”
