Mali to add 3,000 to security amid push for sovereignty

BAMAKO (CONVERSEER) – Malian authorities have launched a large-scale recruitment campaign to enlist 2,000 police officers and 1,000 firefighters as part of national efforts to bolster internal security.

Announced by the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, the campaign unfolds against a backdrop of challenges, including the phased departure of UN peacekeeping forces and renewed instability in the central and northern regions. Authorities say the recruitment aims to strengthen public safety and establish a more professional and community-rooted national force.

This initiative is a key component of the Government’s 2025 – 2026 Action Plan, which targets the deployment of over 24,000 security personnel over two years.

According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the internal security budget has been increased by 38% compared to 2023, underscoring Mali’s determination to invest in self-reliance and long-term stability.

The move is seen as a significant step in Mali’s political transition and its commitment to reclaiming full sovereignty over security matters.
