Two men have been lynched by an angry mob for allegedly stealing a phone in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Converseer gathered that the incident happened on Sunday morning, August 30, at Ekpo Abasi by Yellow Duke Junction.
According to a source, Kelvin Bassey, the men went to rob a young boy living in the storey building by the Junction and collect phone. “Unfortunately, today is their last day here on earth,” he said.
Those familiar with the men said they have been terrorising the area, robbing residents of their phones and other belongings.
“These guys run me street too much for Ekpo Abasi those CRUTECH days, phone never lasted 3 months for my hand (sic),” Nkwam Emmanuel said.
Another, Ernest Ben, said, “Those guys have been disturbing too much for the past few months. They came all the way from Akpabuyo. They operate in this axis using bike – Marian, Mount Zion, Ekpo Abasi, including Yellow Duke. They only go for boys with expensive iPhone.”
Reacting to the jungle justice, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, in a statement confirmed the act, urging members of the public to desist from jungle justice and always hand suspected offenders over to the police or other lawful authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.
“The Cross River State Police Command is aware of an incident involving the deaths of two unidentified men along Ekpo Obasi, near Yellow Duke, Calabar South, in the early hours of 30 August 2026.
“Preliminary information indicates that the two men were allegedly apprehended and attacked by a mob after they were suspected of being involved in a robbery.
“Police operatives visited the scene, documented the incident, and commenced preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify the deceased.
“The remains have been evacuated from the scene with the assistance of the relevant local government authorities for appropriate preservation.
“The Command urges members of the public to desist from jungle justice and always hand suspected offenders over to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution. No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
“Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the statement read.
