The Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation has unveiled plans to introduce a Passenger Group Accident Insurance Scheme in partnership with transport unions to provide financial protection for commuters affected by road traffic accidents across the country.
The initiative was announced during a meeting at the corporation’s headquarters in Abuja when the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers paid a courtesy visit to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NAIC, Hon. Yazid Shehu Danfulani.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the corporation’s Manager, Corporate Affairs, Dr Lawal Umar Maradun, on Friday.
Speaking during the meeting, Danfulani described the proposed Passenger Group Accident Insurance Scheme as a strategic intervention aimed at reducing the financial burden on victims of road traffic accidents and their families.
He said the initiative was being developed in partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners to complement the Federal Government’s efforts to improve road safety and strengthen social protection.
According to him, about 32,000 commuters sustain injuries every year, while an estimated 5,200 people lose their lives annually in road traffic accidents across Nigeria.
“The proposed Passenger Group Accident Insurance Scheme is a strategic intervention designed to reduce the financial burden on victims of road traffic accidents and their families,” Danfulani said.
He added that the insurance cover would provide financial relief to accident victims and their families, helping to cushion the economic impact of injuries and fatalities.
Danfulani reaffirmed NAIC’s commitment to developing innovative insurance products that address national challenges while promoting the welfare and security of Nigerians.
Representatives of the NURTW and NARTO, as well as the project’s consultant, pledged their commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative.
They expressed optimism that the partnership would improve road safety, strengthen social protection and provide greater financial security for millions of commuters across the country.
The meeting also featured a presentation outlining the implementation roadmap for the proposed Passenger Group Accident Insurance Scheme, with stakeholders expressing confidence that the initiative would deliver lasting benefits to Nigerian road users.
