Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a suspected foreign terrorist believed to have links with the Islamic State (ISIS) following a failed attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The arrest followed an intensified military offensive launched after troops repelled a coordinated assault on the community, forcing the insurgents to flee and abandon operational equipment.
Following the encounter, troops carried out exploitation operations along the suspected escape routes of the fleeing terrorists, recovering additional operational materials, including high-frequency hand-held radios and other communication devices believed to have been used by the insurgents.
Zagazola Makama, a security analyst, on his X post stated that the intelligence obtained from the recovered items enabled the military to expand its pursuit into the Lake Chad Islands axis and towards Abadam Local Government Area.
The operation reportedly led to the arrest of a foreign suspect believed to be of Moroccan origin and suspected of having links to ISIS.
Makama reported that the suspect had previously come under intelligence scrutiny after investigators analysed footage retrieved from a camcorder recovered during the Cross Kauwa operation.
The camcorder was said to belong to a suspected terrorist media operative who was killed during the failed attack.
According to the sources, the footage, examined in collaboration with international partners, provided intelligence that contributed to the identification of the suspect.
After his arrest, the suspect was airlifted by a Nigerian Air Force helicopter to a secure military facility, where he is currently undergoing interrogation.
However, investigators are seeking to determine his role within the terrorist network, how he entered Nigeria, his possible links to the wider ISIS organisation, and whether he was involved in training, operational planning, communications or propaganda activities.
Officials described the arrest as a significant intelligence breakthrough that could provide valuable information on the structure, financing and international connections of terrorist groups operating in the Lake Chad Basin.
The development also reinforces concerns previously raised by security agencies that foreign nationals continue to provide varying forms of support to extremist groups in the region, particularly in areas such as communications, explosives, training, media operations and strategic coordination.
Although ISWAP is largely made up of fighters recruited within the Lake Chad Basin, intelligence reports over the years have suggested the presence of foreign facilitators linked to the broader Islamic State network.
Military authorities said interrogation of the suspect is ongoing and declined to disclose further operational details, citing security reasons.
They added that intelligence obtained from the suspect could assist ongoing counter-terrorism operations, identify additional terrorist cells and expose cross-border routes used by insurgents.
The arrest comes as Operation HADIN KAI continues intensified operations across Borno State aimed at disrupting terrorist activities, dismantling logistics networks and preventing insurgents from re-establishing strongholds in the Lake Chad region.
