The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 54-year-old man, Godwin Okoko, in connection with the alleged murder of an official of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) in Calabar.

The incident occurred at the Marian Hill area of Calabar on Monday, May 25, 2026, at about 9:45 a.m., during a traffic enforcement operation.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, officials of TRAMRA were carrying out lawful traffic enforcement duties when they were allegedly attacked during an operation involving a commercial minibus driver suspected of violating traffic regulations.

The police said preliminary investigations revealed that three TRAMRA officials sustained injuries during the incident.

One of the officials reportedly suffered a severe chest injury after allegedly being stabbed with a screwdriver. The victim was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The two other injured officials are currently receiving treatment and are responding positively, the police added.

The statement noted that police operatives swiftly responded to the distress report, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

According to the command, the suspect is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, while investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Cross River State Police Command condemned acts of violence against public officers and individuals carrying out lawful responsibilities, assuring residents that justice would be pursued in accordance with the law.
