Student Dies Trying to Jump Hostel Fence in Calabar

CALABAR – A student only identified as Comrade Offiong has died while trying to jump through the school hostel fence in Calabar, Cross River State.

Converseer gathered that Offiong, popularly known by other students as Prof, was rounding off his National Diploma (ND) at the School of Health Information Management (SHIM), University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

He was on Industrial Training (IT) at the UCTH as part of the fulfilment for the ND and resides at the institution’s hostel.

 

A reliable source disclosed that Offiong was returning from some activities off campus on Tuesday morning, and on getting to the hostel at about midnight, the gate was locked, so he decided to jump the fence when his shirt got stuck on the rods, leading to him suffocating to his death.

“He [Offiong] went to drink yesterday [Monday] and when he returned to the hostel at midnight, the gate was already locked. He tried to jump in through the fence, and in an attempt to do that, his shirt got stuck by one of the irons on the fence.

“He was drunk and couldn’t save himself, so he got suffocated and died around 1 AM when one of the students found him,” the source said.

Our Reporter further gathered that the deceased father arrived at the scene and granted permission for him to be buried, and he was buried around 10 AM.

“It was his dad that even said they should bury him today. His dad was really feeling bad.

“He is hardworking and good with field work too but he drinks too much – mostly these hot drinks,” the source added.
