W/Cup: Ronaldo Missing As FIFA Releases Top Scorers After Group Stage

As the group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 concludes and the knockout rounds approach, FIFA has updated the adidas Golden Boot standings.

Lionel Messi continues to dominate, while Cristiano Ronaldo, despite a record-breaking performance, is notably absent from the top of the current goalscorers list.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi tops the list with 6 goals in three matches, further cementing his status as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.

The 38-year-old has been in sensational form, breaking records and powering Argentina through the group stage.

A group of elite attackers trails him with 4 goals each:

  • Kylian Mbappé (France, 4 goals, 2 assists)
  • Ousmane Dembélé (France, 4 goals, 1 assist)
  • Vinícius Júnior (Brazil, 4 goals, 1 assist)
  • Erling Haaland (Norway, 4 goals)

Several players sit on 3 goals, including Harry Kane (England), Jonathan David (Canada), Ismael Saibari (Morocco), Deniz Undav (Germany), and others.

Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, made history by becoming the first player to score in six different World Cups. He netted twice in Portugal’s 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan, ending a goal drought in major tournaments and silencing early critics after a subdued opener.

However, with only 2 goals in the group stage, Ronaldo does not feature in the current top 10-15 of the Golden Boot race.

His late surge helped Portugal advance, but the volume of goals from Messi and the quartet on 4 has left the five-time Ballon d’Or winner outside the leading conversation for now.

The 2026 group stage has been one of the highest-scoring in tournament history, with strong performances from attacking talents across multiple teams. France, Germany, and the Netherlands have been among the most prolific sides.

Messi’s record-breaking campaign, combined with the emergence and consistency of younger stars like Mbappé, Vinícius, Haaland, and Dembélé, has set a high bar.

The Golden Boot race remains wide open as the Round of 32 begins. Ronaldo and Portugal will look to add to their tally, while Messi aims to extend his lead.

Knockout football often sees more conservative play, but clinical finishers like Messi and others at the top of the list could pull away quickly.
